Drainage can be a big problem. If drainage is poor, water collects and pools in puddles. In winter, this can lead to ice patches and surface damage to your driveway. This is less of a problem when you use resin bound kits, as water naturally permeates through the resin and into the sub-strait rather than pooling on the surface.
Depending on where the driveway is installed, no matter your resin kit of choice, a suitable sustainable urban drainage system (SuDS) may be needed. In this article, we are going to explain what a SuDS is and why you may need one.
A Sustainable Urban Drainage System is, as you probably can guess, a drainage system designed to channel away excess water. Sustainable drainage slows down water runoff and allows it to soak into natural groundwater systems. Water can be diverted into a drain if natural drainage is poor and the soil is predominantly heavy clay, or into a water collection system if you are harvesting rainwater for use in the garden.
Before a SuDS is installed, it is very important that you understand the difference between resin bound and resin bond. When people buy resin bond kits, they don’t always spot that an SuDS is only compatible with resin bound kits.
Resin bound and resin bond surfaces are both suitable for driveways, paths and areas of hardstanding; but only resin bound surfaces are permeable. For this reason, if drainage is an issue and you need a SuDS, the surface of your driveway must be made from bound resin, not bonded resin.
Resin bound surfaces are highly porous. They are applied to a porous base and sub-base. You can choose from a wide range of aggregates, so every surface is completely customisable. This makes resin bound driveways very popular. We sell resin bound kits as well as resin bond kits, so you can install your own driveway or path if you prefer, although it is usually preferable to hire an experienced, reputable contractor.
You might do if drainage is poor and water regularly collects in pools after a heavy shower. It is essential that you decide before you have a drive installed, as it will influence what type of surface is most suitable.
