  Product Updates

Winter is only just around the corner and with the days getting shorter and the mercury falling, it’s understandable that you may be wondering how best to protect your resin driveway from the elements. We often field inquiries from our clients, many of whom are concerned about whether their resin driveway can cope with extreme temperatures, snow, excessive rainfall and everything else the average British winter throws at us. The good news is that you don’t need to worry at all.

Winter Resin Driveway Maintenance

At YRC Resin, we are always happy to offer advice on our products, whether you are a DIY or professional installer. Maintenance is, of course, a big issue. In fact, it’s vital to the longevity of resin driveways, especially during the winter.

All driveways need some degree of maintenance during the winter, especially when it snows. In the UK, we are lucky not to experience extreme weather, but we do sometimes have heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Unless you are planning on staying indoors for the duration - and if you are we don’t blame you - it’s vital that snow and ice are dealt with, or your driveway could turn into a skating rink.

Clearing Snow and Ice

We are often asked about using salt to clear ice and snow. It’s a cheap way to melt snow fast, as well as prevent the formation of new patches of ice. If you have a resin driveway, you can use salt to dissolve ice and clear snow. Salt won’t hurt the resin, but it’s a clever idea to hose down the drive once the temperatures rise, or you could end up with salt residue and unsightly marks. Once the ice and snow have melted, it will drain away through a resin bound driveway, so you won’t end up with pools of standing water.

Another useful tip we have learned over the years is to throw some cat litter on an icy driveway. It provides extra traction to wheels and makes it less slippery.

If you need to clear piles of snow, make sure you use a plastic shovel rather than a metal one. Plastic won’t damage the surface of your resin driveway, whereas a metal shovel could cause damage if you are a bit too enthusiastic about scraping up ice and snow.

Resin driveways are frost proof and very hard wearing, so when winter comes, you don’t need to worry about a thing.
