We like to think we are experts on all things aggregate related, so we figured it was a good idea to answer some questions you may have and bust some myths! Without further ado, here are some of the most common driveway aggregate myths busted…

You Can’t Add Aggregate to a Concrete Driveway

Concrete is a cheap and cheerful way of creating an area of hard standing or a driveway. Unfortunately, over time, concrete cracks and weeds begin to pop up left, right and centre. Before long, it looks a mess and your driveway becomes a real eyesore.

You might be tempted to chuck a load of gravel on top of the concrete, but as we often remind our customers, this is not necessarily a good idea. Throwing loose material on a hard surface is unsafe. The gravel rolls around, scuffs, and fails to bed in properly. Even if you don’t break something critical, it won’t be long before most of your gravel has skidded away, leaving unsightly concrete staring up at you.

Resin bound aggregates are the answer, as it will give you a safe, firm surface to walk or drive on. So, in this instance, dumping a ton of gravel on a concrete driveway is a seriously bad idea, resin bound aggregate is the perfect solution.

The Surface Won’t Last

We’ve heard some horror stories over the years, but as we remind our customers, most problems can be avoided if you use a reputable contractor. Poor quality resin driveways often crack. This isn’t down to the aggregate. Rather, it is because the installer used the wrong mix of resin. Your driveway will look beautiful for many years to come so long as it’s installed by a competent professional!

The Colour Will Fade

You can choose from lots of assorted colours when selecting driveway aggregates. We stock everything from black, white and grey, through to red, pink, cream, sand-coloured and blue. If you want a stable colour, it is best to use a UV stable resin. That way your driveway will remain a consistent colour for many years to come. Okay, so we know the sun is often elusive in the UK, but we like to be optimistic!

Resin Aggregates are Expensive

A resin aggregate finish is approximately the same cost as a tarmac driveway and more expensive than block paving, but you’ll enjoy a far superior finish for many more years to come.
